Before starting the required reading for this week, I was one that was intimidated by teaching engineering in the classroom. Now that I have done a ton of reading, I realize that I have already taught engineering before and experience it almost every day! We use engineering techniques in math and playtime every day in my field experience classroom. We use manipulatives for our math problems and sometimes students need to use their engineering skills to solve the problem. During playtime students absolutely love to play with bendy builders. They try to make cards and airplanes and must figure out which parts to use and how to connect them to create the object.
When I have my own classroom I will use things like blocks, Legos, household items, and other materials that will be easily accessible for students to use. I will encourage students to work together to build on each other’s ideas as well as push them to think outside the box.Giving children enough time to work will allow them to keep their interests and engage them in further learning.
