In order to ensure a successful inquiry-based science lesson with the students within my practicum observation class, I would need to keep the lesson structured while giving them opportunities to investigate. I am currently observing in a general education first grade classroom with 27 students, including one ELL student, one student with an IEP, and one who is being referred to the RTI program for math support. This class is very active and loves to ask questions. For the most part they understand their routines and have a solid classroom management plan set and dialed in. I suggested keeping the lesson structured as a number of the students can become distracted when they are given self-directed activities within a lesson. I know that for an inquiry-based science lesson they would have many questions and will be driven to find answers, but I worry without enough structure they will get sidetracked. In order to keep them focused I would try using timers to keep everyone focused and on track with the lesson. Comment as see you fit
