Anne is a sales representative for a cookie and cracker company. On the final day of the sales period, she receives an emergency call from her supervisor reminding her it is the last day of the third quarter and she is eight percent below her quota. The branch is also three percent below its cumulative quota, and no one on the sales team will receive a quarterly bonus if this difference is not made up. He tells Anne he would be willing to do whatever it takes to make quota.
Anne wants to please her team without jeopardizing her relationships with customers. She knows other sales representatives have padded their account figures by pre-shipping pallets of products that will be demanded in the next period. She could call her best accounts and explain the situation in hopes they might take on extra product. However, if the accounts say “no,” she won’t be able to slip a few extras on the order. What should Anne do?
