The Star Spangled Banner was a poem written in 1814 during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. It was adopted as the national anthem in the early 1900s. However, just this year, it has come under scrutiny as the author had been a slave owner and the words are believed by many to have racist undertones.
